2017 Knauss Fellowships Awards and Schedules

Award Total: $56,500

  • $45,000 for your stipend and living expenses (per diem)
  • $9,000 to cover mandatory health benefits, fringe, and moving expenses
  • Up to $2,500 for placement week
  • Any remaining funds beyond the $45,000 shall be used during the fellowship year, first to satisfy academic degree-related activities (e.g. tuition) and second for fellowship-related activities.
  • Potential additional travel funds provided by host institution

Schedule

November 2015 NOAA releases 2017 Federal Funding Opportunity and Maryland Sea Grant opens the Knauss Fellowship application process
12 February 2016 Applications, as complete PDFs, due to Maryland Sea Grant
March 2016 Candidate interviews at Maryland Sea Grant; finalists selected
March 2016 Maryland Sea Grant submits up to six finalist application packets to National Sea Grant program for their final selection
June 2016 Selection process and subsequent notification to Sea Grant programs of selected finalists completed.
October 2016 Meet with Maryland Sea Grant to discuss upcoming fellowship before placement week
4-9 December 2016 Placement week in Washington, D.C.
January 2017 Meet with Maryland Sea Grant to complete paperwork
10 January 2017 Submit photo and biographical sketch to Maryland Sea Grant
January 2017 Submit all required Human Resources paperwork to Maryland Sea Grant
1 February 2017 Fellowship starts
March 2017 Knauss welcome reception and dinner on Capitol Hill
31 January 2018 Fellowship ends; final report due to Maryland Sea Grant and NOAA
