Migrations

The annual migration of the spotted salamander from winter slumber to treks into a vernal pool is a unique event to behold. Looking at historical weather data can help estimate when the spotted salamander, or spotteds, were on the move. There are some key factors that repeat from year to year that bring the spotteds out of their burrows for a brief breeding season. Look for the following:

  • A warming trend above 60°F
  • A measureable rain event after the warming trend

Take the salamander icon and trace the warming trend on the calendar and then stop on the date you think they emerged for migration. If you guess correctly, the date on the calendar will turn green and you will see a salamander animation. If you guess incorrectly, the date on the calendar will turn red.

Move Sal to the day you think the migration started.
